What is innovation?

In this world there are thinkers and doers.  Perhaps innovators fall somewhere between the two.

For, after hearing Bob Metcalfe, his quirky personality and quick responses showed he was a sharp man and could think.  His stories of how he overcame being fired as the CEO of his own company and other various pitfalls within his five careers demonstrated could do.  If Metcalfe can figure out a way to balance this practicality of doing tasks and thinking how better to do them, could this be the answer to what makes an innovator such?

Humbly, I state the following: I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to stump such a brilliant man with such a simple question.  Looking back, the words I used to ask the question may have been simple, but the overall concept of my question is rather complex.

"What mindset do you need to innovate things that eventually change our interaction with information, our communication, and the world?"

Maybe someone will think about this idea and do something that shows us all how to change our mindsets.  No longer will we be just thinkers or doers-we can be innovators.
